Over a thirty-seven year career at the companies of the Publicis Groupe, an eighty-thousand-person global marketing and business information transformation firm, I helped found or cofound some of the first digital agencies and future-oriented strategic consultancies As well as contributing to the shaping and growth of one of the two largest buyers of digital, data-driven media in the world. I came to the United States and received an MBA in marketing and finance from one of the most quantitative schools in the world: the University of Chicago. I grew up in Bombay, India, receiving a degree in economics and advanced mathematics from the University of Bombay. Lest you think I’m an anti-tech zealot who believes we should go back to a kinder, gentler, analog time, let me tell you a little about myself. I can't recall when Grady Hendrix and I had a conversation about everything I would love to see in a Horror novel, but the man must have been taking notes!!! Unfortunately, she’ll need his help to get the house ready for sale because it’ll take more than some new paint on the walls and clearing out a lifetime of memories to get this place on the market.īut some houses don’t want to be sold, and their home has other plans for both of them… Most of all, she doesn’t want to deal with her brother, Mark, who never left their hometown, gets fired from one job after another, and resents her success. She doesn’t want to learn how to live without the two people who knew and loved her best in the world. She doesn’t want to deal with her family home, stuffed to the rafters with the remnants of her father’s academic career and her mother’s lifelong obsession with puppets and dolls. She doesn’t want to leave her daughter with her ex and fly to Charleston. When Louise finds out her parents have died, she dreads going home. Grady Hendrix takes on the haunted house in a thrilling new novel that explores the way your past-and your family-can haunt you like nothing else. Mikita Brottman offers an enlightening view to an often misunderstood animal, showing that the hyena is in fact a complex, intelligent and highly sociable creature. Hyena investigates this fascinating animal throughout history. Shrouded in taboo, it has been the source of talismanic objects since at least the ancient Greek and Roman Empires. They are nice, really well, no worse than any other carnivore, and more tractable. Hyenas are almost universally regarded as nasty, scheming charlatans that skulk in the back. Hyenas, Mikita Brottman argues, get a bad rap. Hyena investigates representations of this fascinating animal throughout history. Read Hyena by Mikita Brottman available from Rakuten Kobo. In her new account Mikita Brottman offers an alternative view, showing that the hyena is in fact a complex, intelligent and highly sociable creature. Scorned as little more than scavenging carrion-eaters, vandals and thieves, since the earliest times hyenas have been both mistreated and misunderstood. In almost every culture, hyenas are regarded as nasty, scheming charlatans, skulking in the back alleyways of the animal kingdom. The children talk with one another about the things they missed and one of the girls around the fire mentioned how she would like to eat scrambled eggs. In the beginning in the fifth part, a group of children with the bug are presented sitting around a fire, trying to cook something for themselves. The woods are later used by the ones affected by the bug as a safe place, a place where they can live without being scared of being ostracized by the rest of the society. The healthy kids use the woods as a place where they can hide and talk about subjects frowned upon or consume drugs and alcohol. One of the most important symbols in the novel is the woods used here as a symbol for safety. The lake is described as being dirty and filled with garbage, thus transmitting this idea even further. The lake is a symbol in this context because it is used to suggest degradation. In the first installment, the narrator has a dream in which boys in a dirty lake offer him some garbage to eat and then become insulted when he refuses. I've already started Six Degrees of Lust, which is number two in the series, very good so far. Still, I want to know more about these guys, and there's hope because the title says this is number one of a series. I kept paging backward and forward in my Kindle, just to see if I'd missed a page or two. Will Remy be able to face, accept, and do something about his attraction for his BFF? This sequel picks right off where 60 Percent Proof, a very short story, left off. Unrealized potential, is the phrase upppermost in my mind when I think of this delicious story. 4.25 stars.Review completed SeptemSix Degrees of Separation is a very good sequel to Six Degrees of Lust and covers the time span between August 30 and September 21, 2009. The books that publishers send you pile up so fast that reading anything else seems like an irresponsible luxury. One of the hazards of being a full-time fantasy and SF critic is that your reading schedule often doesn’t allow for work outside the genre. The book is about sacrifice and what you would give up for the ones you love the most much more than just a simple teen love story. The plan is cryptic and involves saving more souls along the way. He sends word through the magnificent archangel, Michael. Both angels are tied to whatever the Heavenly Father has planned. Back on earth, Bethany’s siblings, Gabriel and Ivy, along with Xavier try to figure out how to rescue her. We find out quickly that for Jake this is not just about starting a war with Heaven, he truly loves Bethany and wants her to accept him and choose to love him back. The demons that look beautiful on the outside just barely hide the hideous disfigurement of their true selves. There is a lot of mushy love between Bethany and Xavier in the beginning, but the story really gets going when Jake Throne tricks Bethany and kidnaps her into Hades aka Hell! The author creates a vivid and frightening underworld that draws on legend with plenty of creative modern twists. Alexandra Adornetto’s second book in the Halo trilogy was a very exciting read. I’ve said before that for the story to really take flight (yes, that pun was intended) there needs to be a religious component. I’ve been reading as much angel fantasy as I can get my hands on. |
